Another tip from Helfman involves the often-overlooked ceiling fan. Instead of using it to cool down a room, set the fan to a low speed and ensure the blades are spinning counterclockwise. "This technique pushes the warm air that rises back down into the living space," Helfman clarifies. "Heat naturally rises, so we want to redirect it back to where we need it most."
Windows and doors are notorious culprits when it comes to heat loss, and Helfman has practical advice here as well. As Helfman puts it, "This adds insulation, forcing the heat to travel through the material of the blinds before escaping through the glass."
To prevent plumbing issues in colder months, especially with pipes located under sinks on external walls, Helfman recommends opening cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. This can significantly reduce the risk of freezing. Additionally, in extreme cold, letting a thin stream of water flow from faucets can keep the water moving and help avoid pipe freeze-ups.
Drafts are another significant issue, particularly around exterior doors. A simple and effective solution is to place a towel at the bottom of the door. Helfman notes, "This acts as an insulator, minimizing air loss and keeping the warmth inside."
