Our children’s playgrounds may be hiding a dangerous secret—one that could put their health at risk. Recent tests conducted by campaigners in the UK have uncovered traces of glyphosate, a pesticide linked to cancer, in playgrounds across London and surrounding areas. But here’s where it gets controversial: despite the World Health Organization classifying glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen back in 2015, local authorities in the UK continue to use thousands of liters of glyphosate-based herbicides in public green spaces. This raises a critical question: are we prioritizing weed-free parks over our children’s safety?
Campaigners from the Pesticides Action Network (PAN) UK tested 13 playgrounds in Kent, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, Tower Hamlets, and Hackney. Alarmingly, eight of these playgrounds showed traces of glyphosate or its breakdown product, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). The only area where no traces were found was Hackney, which banned glyphosate in public spaces in 2021. This stark contrast highlights the impact of policy changes on public health.
“Finding glyphosate residues in playgrounds, especially on equipment like swings and slides, is deeply worrying,” said Nick Mole from PAN UK. “Young children often put their hands and objects in their mouths, making this exposure particularly risky.” And this is the part most people miss: glyphosate isn’t just linked to cancer. Studies by Prof Michael Antoniou, a molecular genetics and toxicology specialist at King’s College London, reveal that exposure to glyphosate herbicides increases the risk of fatty liver disease, kidney disease, and a range of cancers, including leukemia. “The claim that glyphosate is safe doesn’t hold up under current scientific scrutiny,” Antoniou warns. “A safe dose remains unknown, and we must reduce its use, especially in areas frequented by children.”
Despite growing concerns, glyphosate remains authorized for use in UK public spaces, with councils routinely applying it in parks, playing fields, cemeteries, and pavements. However, pressure is mounting for stricter regulations. Siân Berry, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, has proposed a bill urging councils to ban glyphosate in public areas. “Many councils have already adopted safer, nature-friendly methods to manage plant growth,” Berry points out. “There’s no reason to expose our children to such hazards when better alternatives exist.”
At Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets, parents expressed shock and concern. “Playgrounds should be the safest place for children,” said Dafina Bozha, watching her daughter play. “If something here could harm her health, it’s a major issue for me.” Another parent, Naz B, added, “Playgrounds are meant to connect children with nature, not expose them to harmful chemicals. With so many natural and organic alternatives available, why are we still using outdated, risky substances?”
The Health and Safety Executive is set to re-examine glyphosate’s authorization this year, with a public consultation expected soon.
