Australia Faces Petrol Price Surge: Are Oil Giants Profiteering Amid Iran War? (2026)

A controversial and alarming situation is unfolding in Australia as oil companies face accusations of exploiting the Iran war for profit. With petrol prices skyrocketing, the average cost of unleaded petrol has surpassed $2 per litre in major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

In Melbourne, half of the petrol stations are charging a staggering 219.9 cents per litre, while Sydney stations have raised prices to between 217.9 and 223.9 cents, far exceeding the expected price cycle. Brisbane, too, has the highest average unleaded price among the three capitals, at 210.2 cents per litre.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury condemns these price hikes as unjustifiable, stating, "Oil companies are using the Middle East crisis as a pretext to boost their margins." He calls for an immediate halt to this profiteering.

However, the situation is not uniform across the country. Adelaide and Perth have more stable prices, with unleaded petrol averaging 185 and 189.1 cents per litre, respectively.

But here's where it gets controversial: these price hikes come despite Treasurer Jim Chalmers' warning to retailers, urging the ACCC to monitor for price gouging due to the global oil price jump. Global oil prices have indeed been rising, but these wholesale prices take time to filter down to consumers.

And this is the part most people miss: despite the panic, Australia has a good stock of petrol in reserve, with a 34-day supply of diesel and a 36-day supply of unleaded petrol. ACAPMA CEO Rowan Lee assures that even if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, Australia's oil supply won't run out, as the country sources most of its fuel from Singapore and other Asian countries, not the Middle East.

So, is this a case of oil companies taking advantage of a crisis, or a necessary response to global market forces? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss this further!
