DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, June 21, 2024 (1)

Barbara D. Livingston

First post for Belmont at the Big A racing is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET on Friday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:34 BAQ 2nd WARMING (#9, 6-1) is by new sire Global Campaign and sold for $100k after breezing 10.1 in March; shows up with a series of steady breezes in tow for a top barn; has grass in her pedigree being a half to two turf winners from a dam who is a full-sister to stakes winners Lennyfrommalibu (multiple stakes wins turf, 108 Beyerr top sprinting) and Heat Du Jour (five wins, all turf, 92 Beyer top). -Mike Beer|Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:58 LRL 4th STORM FORCE (#3, 20-1) finished ahead of two next-out dirt winners (ninth-finisher graduated for $12,500 on dirt by 7 3/4 lengths with a 60 Beyer) when an even sixth in circuit debut. Pulled going into the first turn, settled into a tracking position outside, then stayed on without threatening while in between. Perhaps can improve with new blinkers for barn that went 3 for the last 12 (25%, $4.83 ROI) racing second after layoffs between four and six months. Alvelo departs for Always Fun. -Dan Illman|Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:23 GP 4th WICKED PHANTOM (#3, 8-1) ran evenly in his debut but didn't get much play when sent off at 18-1. He broke last which didn't help matters. Added distance is the key and this barn is 19% going sprint to route. They are 25% with their maiden second time starters. -Scott Ehlers|Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:25 MTH 2nd ST. ERLING (#7, 8-1) is out of a dam who won two races and was second twice in five career starts, and she produced at least four winners, including Silver Spun (14 career wins) and Sirenusa (two-time stakes winner, earned over $180K); this colt has a couple of works that hint at some speed and he may be overlooked a bit in the wagering. -Kenny Peck|Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:54 WO 4th JOHNNY GOLD (#3, 6-1) was along for third behind next-out winner Summer Commander, over a track that aided speed in the sprints, in his May 24 seasonal bow. The Ky-bred is dropping from OS/$40K company to $25K with the live bug Aebly back in the saddle and has worked twice leading up to this engagement. -Ron Gierkink|Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:07 BAQ 5th MERAVIGLIOSO (#8, 8-1) snapped a long losing streak when switching barns earlier this year, then came right back and win again in her next start despite moving up in class; didn't quite handle allowance types in the spring but ran better than it looks when dropped back down last month, as she was caught dueling a fast pace in a race that went to closers over a mile; cuts back off the claim. -Mike Beer|Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:26 WO 5th WHY EM SEA AY (#2, 12-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink).|Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:33 LRL 7th IRISH WARLOCK (#1A, 10-1) was likely overmatched against open first-level allowance foes on Black-Eyed Susan Friday. Broke out a bit from the far wide, post, tracked the pace three wide, then couldn't go with them when it mattered. The runner-up then ran third in a similar spot with a 78 Beyer. Lots of seconds and thirds on his page, but he has good tactical speed and seems well-entered in this state-sired event. -Dan Illman|Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:39 BAQ 6th LET'S GO BIG BLUE (#6, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer).|Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:57 WO 6th STORMIN DAVE (#8, 20-1) was bounced around on the backstretch while dueling up front with the favorite before tiring when switching from Tapeta to the inner turf in his second start back. He deserves a mulligan in this shorter main turf sprint in the third race of his form cycle. -Ron Gierkink|Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:23 MTH 6th POST COMMAND (#11, 6-1) ran a big race for the place when last seen on the main track, closing nicely through the lane on a day when outside speed-types seemed to have the edge; the winner was another who closed ground late, and this gelding's stock rose when that rival returned to score again in his first start against winners (career-best 71 Beyer). -Kenny Peck|Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:28 WO 7th C C'S KINGDOM (#6, 6-1) is moving out to a suitable distance off a wide third over rail-favoring track on the turn in his seven-furlong comeback. He rarely runs a bad one and his trainer has pretty good stats second-time off a layoff. -Ron Gierkink|Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:30 GP 8th MARSHAMARSHAMARSHA (#7, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers).|Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:02 GP 9th HARRY'S ONTHEFLY (#4, 6-1) has only tried the Tapeta twice but ran well in both. In fact, this gelding has never run poorly. He can fire fresh as he has done it three times. His works are well spaced all for a barn that is 20% off a plus 180 day layoff (1 for 5). Race flow is fine and this gelding has speed if needed. What if this guy is more mature than when last seen in December? -Scott Ehlers|Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:13 BAQ 9th ZEN AIR (#3, 15-1) only earned a Beyer of 33 while racing for a lower tag in his career debut back in January, but he had excuses in that spot and deserves another chance for an underrated trainer. -Mike Beer|Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:20 MTH 8th CONFISCATED (#5, 4-1) is obviously a top contender off that debut run at Parx, where he came up a neck short as the favorite after sitting just off the pace from the start; that tactical speed should mean he's once again well spotted from the break. -Kenny Peck|Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:32 GP 10th WICCA WISDOM (#3, 10-1) jumped in class off the claim and ran great when 2nd at 19-1. Is this mare a new synth horse? Race flow is more than fair and this horse should be more acclimated today. Connections could have dropped this mare into restricted foes but opt for double nickel claimers again. -Scott Ehlers|Bet this race with DRF Bets
