Hong Kong's Flu Season: A Potential Year-Round Threat?

"The summer influenza peak, which usually occurs around mid-October, is gradually receding, but the process is being complicated by the arrival of cooler weather," Hui explained. He added that the drop in temperature naturally boosts viral activity, and with a cold front moving across Guangdong, Hong Kong can expect mercury levels to dip as low as 13 degrees later this week.
"When people seek shelter from the cold indoors, where air circulation is often poor, it creates an environment that could prolong the transmission period," Hui said, highlighting places like schools and elderly homes as potential hotspots.
The dominant strain, a variant of H3N2, has undergone an 'antigenic drift', resulting in seven mutations that primarily impact its transmissibility. UK data estimates that this mutated strain could infect 140 people for every 100 cases, a significant increase from the previous estimate of 120.
"This combination of factors may prevent the epidemic from following its usual six-to-eight-week decline and could extend the transmission period indefinitely," Hui warned.
