How does the movie end?

Hey everyone!
Can anyone please tell me how Endless Love ends? I've never been able to see the ending and I've heard conflicting info. regarding it. Some have said David and Jade finally get back together and others say Jade broke up with him for good. So, which one happened? Thanks in advance!

Saw it origianlly in the theatres. Caught the tail end of it on cable recently. Watched only to see if it was in fact as bad as I remember (Answer: Yes).
Anyway, in the part I saw, Jade is trying to say goodye forever to David, he seems to be accepting it grudgingly, then as she's walking out for good he grabs her violently and wrestles her onto the bed shouting about he won't let her go, that he KNOWS she still loves him etc. You can't quite tell if it's a rape or not. But I guess it's not, because then she breaks down and admits that it's true, she does love him. They kiss passionately.
Next scene is in the hotel or apartment house lobby, I assume moments later. Jade's brother accuses David of killing their father. A fight breaks out, the cops are called and they drag David away while he's protests his innocence, screaming that it was an accident.
Last scene shows David in some sort of institution - you can't quite tell if it's reform school or minimum security prision or an asylum. He peers out the barred windows and sees Jade approaching apparently for a visit. And so, it becomes somewhat clear that theirs was in fact an endless love.
You must like this movie - that's why you're interestd in the ending, but I say: YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be home late but I'll be home

As i recall, was the end sequence with David looking out the bars to Brooke Shields not a mirage? I remember feeling sad at the end of the movie so can't recall if it was just him imagining her appearing. Didn't she just fade in when he was looking out the window? Haven't seen it for about 10 years of course, so not sure.

The movie Blow - Spoilers

You remind me of the end of Blow when Depps visit with his daughter is in fact a fantasy/halucination. Don't recall Shields' image fading away to indicate she wasn't really there. That would be in contradiction to the Endless Love theme. Unless it was one sided.
Do you know that guy?
No. But he's a dick.

In the scene preceding this one that everyone is argueing, or rather, discussing Jade asked her mother what to do. Her mother simply says that she has to make a choice. Either move on with your life or stay with David. She would not have gone to him had she choose to move on.
With her going to David, and the Endless Love Theme playing in the background, it is obvious of her intention, to be with David. She will most likely support him with his parole violations and court actions, etc. But now she will be with him through it, he will not have to be sad anymore. Nice ending to an nice movie, IMHO.

This is so funny, I was actually asking my mom about the end. What I think happens is that David is most surely in jail. He did violate the whole not supposed to see the Butterfields thing. Jade is going to see him, not necessarily to renew their love, but possibly to start a friendship and be there for him. It would be too hard for her to be in a serious relationship like the one they had. Plus, David, though you can really empathize with him, he is a lil bit psycho. His obsession went too far. So, because of that, I don't think Jade is really going to be with him and renew their endless love, but rather she is just giving him the time of day because she knows how much he has cared for her and loved her and how much he will always love and care for her.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Jade IS still with him. You even get the impression that this is not the first time she has gone to see him (she probably goes every day). She never stopped loving him that's the reason the title of the book/movie is Endless Love. Get it? ;)

I just finished reading the book. And the movie totally butchered everything in that book. The book is way better. And, also, in the end, Jade is not still with him. She will always love him, but she tells him that she can never see him again after she finds out about her dad and why he died. She gets married to a Frenchman and she lives in Europe and they never see each other again. David gets released from another asylum and he lives with another woman. I never said she stopped loving him. She just doesn't end up with him. She moves on and has a completely different life, as does he.

Gosh, I read the book SO long ago. Heck, it's been quite a while since I've even seen the movie. but I was in love with it to no end. I agree, though, that the book was better. I was just so excited to see the book filmed and those characters up there on the screen, that I just stopped thinking about how much better the book really was. Seems like I do remember a different, sadder ending in the book. I think they tried to give the movie something a little more "up-beat", though they needn't have bothered. Why can't they just film what's in the novel, ending and all? Endless Love would be a great movie to re-make, since they're making all these re-makes these days (some of them not even as old as Endless Love).

I would love to remake that movie. Because the film was so bad a lot of people don't really give the book the recognition it deserves. I think it should be remade and everything in the movie should be very close to the book. Everything about the book is wonderful. It is definitely one of my all-time favorites.

Is it me or Brooke Shields is dressed in that last scene as if she's much older and many years have passed? I mean, maybe they try to show that David's in jail and many years later she still visits him/is still with him

That is a good point, it's possible many years have passed and she is still going to see him.

I agree, I remember reading the novel many years ago and being just heartbroken at the end. I think in the novel, which is so different from the movie, he did end up going crazy, didn't he? But I didn't feel him to be crazy when he was put away the first time, after the fire. I didn't really understand why he set that fire. I mean I remember him thinking he'd end up being a hero but I just didn't get why he had to take such drastic measures. Maybe he was crazy.
I never did understand in the movie how she could just never write to him or find anything out about him and how he was doing. I thought she loved him just as much as he loved her (the movie) but I guess not. It was confusing. But then at the hotel she claimed she didn't stop loving him.
I was very young when the movie came out but I do remember being just blown away by the parties, etc., that the parents had with their kids and teenage friends. Such a far cry from what my parents were like! I would have wanted to hang around them too! :)

David sets the fire to the house so he can "rescue" the family & become a hero in their eyes, hopefully to win himself back into the family. The fire becomes so out of control he ends up burning the house down instead, which was not his intention. That's why he is "put away" in the mental hospital. He thought the wet newspapers would just smoke alot.
In both the book & movie Jade makes no attempt to contact David at all. I agree with you, I would think she would at least get in touch with him with a letter or in touch with someone who knows him to see how he is. But she doesn't. She was supposed to be madly in love with him as he is with her.
The last line of the book states: "I see your face (Jade) in every seat (crowd)". Which basically says at the end of the book he is still in love & obsessed with her. Which makes the end very sad & depressing. He will not or cannot move on.

It's been a long time since I've seen it but I think what happened was after he burned down the house he either went to jail or an institution or maybe community service but not for a long time. It was an accident. I think when he got out the family moved to New York and he was in New York trying to visit Jade and the father saw him thinking he was trying to see Jade and then has a heart attack chasing him and then they blame David for the killing or violating the restraining order so he goes back to jail.

Jade's father doesn't suffer a heart attack - he gets run over by a car as he crosses the street to try to confront David.

You're right, now I remember. I saw it once in the theater in 1981 and once on cable 1 1/2 years later. It's been a while. It's funny that Brooke Shields was 15 when this was filmed the year before, but looked older then her younger brother played by Ian Ziering(Steve Sanders 90210) who was about 16 when it was filmed. He did look younger then she did.

The movie is fine. Brooke Shields was never more beautiful but I am not sure she is the hottest thing in the flick. Martin Hewitt, was, oh my god, stunning.

I think were supposed to determine ourselves what happens between them. All you see is her walking up towards the building where David is (whether its jail or the institution) and i think its up to us whether we feel they get back together or not. I think their both seriously ill though and should be locked in institutions for the rest of their lives! Endless love?! try endless insanity!
