A moment of pure magic on the ice! The Abbotsford Canucks secured a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against the Laval Rocket, thanks to a spectacular game-winning goal by Jonathan Lekkerimäki. This win not only split the midweek series but also gave the home crowd a reason to cheer after a hard-fought battle.
In a game that was a stark contrast to the previous night's high-scoring affair, scoring chances were indeed a rare commodity. The Laval Rocket, demonstrating their offensive prowess, managed to strike first. Laurent Dauphin, currently the AHL's second-leading scorer with 43 points, orchestrated a brilliant play, threading a precise pass across the ice to Joshua Roy. Roy made no mistake, finishing cleanly to put the Rocket up 1-0.
But here's where it gets interesting... Despite being outshot an astonishing 13-3 in the first period, the Canucks demonstrated incredible resilience. Much like in their previous game, they managed to stay within striking distance by relying on solid defensive structure and stellar goaltending, patiently waiting for their opportunity. Circling near the top of the zone, he meticulously read the coverage, waiting for his opening. With a final burst of speed towards the net, he unleashed a perfectly placed snapshot, beating Kaapo Kähkönen cleanly over the shoulder for the game-winner.
This goal marked Lekkerimäki's ninth of the season in just 14 games, putting him in a tie for the team lead with Chase Wouters and Ben Berard. Despite facing some time off due to injury, the 21-year-old is scoring at an exceptional rate, averaging over half a goal per game. When healthy, Lekkerimäki has truly been the dynamic, dangerous, and game-deciding player that Abbotsford envisioned.
With this victory, the Canucks now hold a 4-6-0-1 record in January and 13-22-3-3 on the season. Their next challenge awaits this weekend as they host the San Diego Gulls.
