Another super-duper stacked month this May, giving us all even more of an excuse (not that any was needed) to stay locked up inside a dark room for hours at a time while the sun beams down outside.
Doom: The Dark Ages (15th May)leads the triple-A pack midway through the month. People still seem to be stubbornly split on Eternal, with some preferring the relative simplicity of Doom 2016, but The Dark Ages looks to be changing things up again with its shield mechanic and more measured pace.The trailers have been extremely metal so far, to the point where I'm staying out of the dedicated thread for fear of spoilers. Will it be Doom Souls? Not long to go before we can find out.
Talking of Souls, and talking of divisive games, Elden Ring: Nightreign(29th May) arrives at the end of the month from the remarkably productive FromSoftware. Sadly, the inherent multiplayerness of this is a big turn off for me, but I'm sure it's destined to be an unstoppable mega hit if the popularity of the base game is anything to go by. For most of us, however, more challenging than fighting the Nameless King again will probably be finding two other willing friends to play with (ho ho).
The not-triple-A-but-not-exactly-indie-either docket is filled out quite handsomely this month, too, starting with the Tim Burtonesque stop motion horrorThe Midnight Walk (8th May), which I think I'll pick up as it struck a chord with me when it was first revealed. On the same day, we've got Revenge of the Shadow Planetto scratch our collective 3D Metroidvania itches until Prime 4 comes out later in the year. This is followed by the top-down 80s-cop-em-upThe Precincton 13th May, which looks promising, as well as Monster Train 2on the 21st, which those of us with addictive personalities should probably best avoid, and then 360-era throwbackBlades of Firethe day after to ensure our quota for burly men, blacksmithing and monster hacking is met for the month.
