SUGAR COOKIE FROSTING INGREDIENTS

  • Powdered Sugar - Powdered sugar is the premier sugar for frostings. But, what is powdered sugar anyway? It's granulated sugar that has been pulverized to a fine powder and mixed with a small amount of cornstarch. The cornstarch is added to the fine sugar as an anti-caking agent and keeping the granules from clumping together.
  • Shortening - You will need plain, room temperature vegetable shortening for this recipe.
  • Milk - Take care when adding the milk. Too much and your Sugar Cookie Frosting will be soupy, too little and your frosting will have a difficult time coming together.
  • Vanilla and Salt - Without vanilla extract and salt, the frosting would be completely one dimensional, singing of only one note -- that note is (sadly) super sweet. These two ingredients are essential to a stellar frosting.

HOW TO MAKE SUGAR COOKIE FROSTING

  1. Add Ingredients to Mixer - Add all of the frosting ingredients to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and begin mixing on low. If you begin mixing on high, beware -- sugar will fly! Don't have a stand mixer? No problem! You can use a handheld mixer and a large mixing bowl instead.
  2. Mix On Medium-High - Once the sugar is mostly mixed in, increase the speed to medium-high, and blend it together until smooth and creamy.
  3. Spread or Save For Later - Use your Sugar Cookie Frosting right away or store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

HOW TO ADD COLOR TO FROSTING?

There are two different types of food coloring you used for frosting. One is traditional liquid food coloring and the other is called gel food coloring (often sold at specialty craft stores). Gel food coloring is much more pigmented than liquid food coloring, but be wary -- you'll find a little bit goes a long, long way.

The general rule of thumb when adding food coloring to your Sugar Cookie Frosting is this: You can add, but you can't take away! Add the coloring in small increments, and mix well after each addition until you reach the desired pigment.

HOW DO YOU FROST SUGAR COOKIES?

To frost Sugar Cookies, add a dollop of frosting to the top of each cookie and spread to the edges using either the back of a spoon or a small offset spatula. If you like the creviced, wavy-line look of a frosted cookie, use a gentle back and forth motion as you spread the frosting.

HOW TO STORE SUGAR COOKIE FROSTINGS

While sugar is technically a preservative, it's best to store your homemade Sugar Cookie Frosting in the refrigerator. The frosting will keep for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container. Note, you may need to set it out for an hour or so before reusing it so that it becomes easily spreadable once again.

FAQs

What is sugar cookie icing made of? ›

Royal icing is a sweet, hard icing made from powdered sugar, egg whites or meringue powder, and flavorings like vanilla or a squeeze of lemon juice.

What consistency should sugar cookie frosting be? ›

Outlining-consistency icing should squeeze easily out of a #2 pastry tip, stay in place, and hold its shape on the cookie when it lands. If the icing is too stiff, it will be hard to squeeze. If it is too loose, it will spread a little when it lands on the cookie—this won't help when you start flooding.

What is the best type of frosting for cookies? ›

Royal icing is probably the most popular icing that cookie decorators use. It is preferable because it holds up very well if the cookies need to be stacked, shipped, stored, etc.. Royal icing can be made into a very nice glaze and also works great for very fine detail work.

Why is my sugar cookie icing not hardening? ›

Undermix, and your royal icing looks translucent and is structurally weak. Overwhip, and you're giving too much volume to the egg proteins via air, causing the structure to weaken in a different way. Overmixed icing usually looks porous when dry, and sometimes will not even fully dry and be soft/brittle.

What is the difference between cookie icing and frosting? ›

Frosting is the thickest of these confections and is ideal for spreading or piping on cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Icing is a little thinner than frosting and is often poured or piped over coffee cakes, pound cakes, doughnuts and cookies—and it usually hardens when it dries.

What is the difference between royal icing and sugar cookie icing? ›

Cookie icing can be used in the same way that royal icing can; however, it doesn't dry as hard as royal icing does. It's great for flooding cookies or piping designs into wet icing. To thin the consistency of cookie icing, just pop it in the microwave for about 20 seconds.

How to frost sugar cookies like a pro? ›

Start by outlining the cookie with piping-consistency icing in any color you choose. Then, use flooding-consistency icing to fill the outlined area, starting by flooding around the edges and working your way towards the center. If the flooding is inconsistent in thickness, redistribute the wet icing with a toothpick.

What is royal icing made of? ›

Royal icing is frosting that's made from confectioners' sugar, egg whites, and flavorings, and used in many ways to decorate cookies and cakes. The biggest difference between buttercream frosting and royal icing is texture-buttercream is creamy and soft; royal icing hardens to a candy-like texture.

Why is my sugar cookie icing runny? ›

Too much water can make your icing running and it will flow right off the cookie. The way to make the icing a little stiffer is to add more powdered sugar back into it. You are going to need quite a bit of powdered sugar to change the icing consistency so be generous with it so you don't over mix the icing.

What kind of frosting do most bakeries use? ›

Buttercream Frosting

Buttercream frostings rely on the main ingredient of butter and will be the most common type of frosting you will find in a bakery.

Does cookie icing dry hard? ›

Does cookie icing harden? Cookie icing does not harden and will not dry hard like royal icing will. Therefore, we don't suggest using cookie icing for cookies that are going to be stacked or gifted or for assembling gingerbread houses.

How long to dry sugar cookie icing? ›

If you need a cookie decorating alternative to traditional royal icing, this sugar cookie icing is a great choice. It's like a very thick glaze. This icing takes awhile to dry, about 24 hours, and you can't pipe detail very well, but if you want simple decoration and a simple icing, this is it!

How long do sugar cookies need to dry before icing? ›

Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before decorating. I like to decorate cookies directly on baking sheets so I can stick the entire baking sheet in the refrigerator to help set the icing. So place the cooled cookies back on baking sheets.

Is icing sugar made from cane sugar? ›

Icing Sugar: Also known as confectioner's sugar or powdered sugar, it's actually a combination of very finely ground granulated sugar with the addition of cornstarch, which acts as an anti-clumping agent (ie.

What makes royal icing harden? ›

Royal icing is made from confectioners sugar, water, egg white, and flavorings. This is the only icing that I use to decorate my cookies. The egg white is what allows it to dry hard, which is what makes royal icing so versatile.

Is powdered sugar the same as icing sugar? ›

Icing sugar, also known as powdered sugar or confectioner's sugar, is made by finely grinding granulated sugar until it is a very fine powder.

What kind of store bought frosting for sugar cookies? ›

What kind of icing goes on sugar cookies? For more advanced techniques, you can use store-bought white or colored frosting made specifically for decorating sugar cookies (like Wilton's).
