The Doodle Grid Method — Antonio Alanís (2024)

This is what I learned about drawing when using the Doodle Grid Method.

Hello! Have you heard about the Doodle Grid Method?!

I discovered this drawing technique earlier this year, thanks to @tenhun. Essentially, these doodles replace the traditional grid method when artists transfer a drawing reference and project it to a larger surface. Most beginning artists use the grid method when learning to draw.

I learned that the Doodle Grid Method is helping me to:

  1. Detach myself from drawing what I think I see to drawing what I see.

  2. See my drawing as a larger picture and not get lost in details.

  3. Draw my subject by treating it as shapes and lines and not thinking about drawing who I’m drawing.

  4. Tweaking the Doodle Grid Method further by just using letters work just fine. The Doodle Grid Method uses a combination of symbols, not only letters.

  5. The Doodle Grid Method saves time: I did not spend hours drawing squares on my reference and canvas.

  6. I am not worrying about drawing distortion.

  7. Thinking of different ways to make drawing fun!

  8. Using this method to improve drawing likeness.

  9. Thinking that drawing is so personal and there are multiple ways of doing it.

  10. I don’t have to use a projector and I will continue to use this method in the future.
