The Grim Reality of Eye Injuries in MMA
Former UFC fighter Michael Bisping, who fought with a single eye, has shared his insights on the situation surrounding Tom Aspinall's eye injury, and it's a sobering perspective. Aspinall, the UFC heavyweight champion, faces a challenging road ahead due to the severe eye damage he sustained in his fight against Ciryl Gane.
But here's where it gets controversial... Joe Rogan, known for his bold opinions, suggested that Aspinall might never fight again. However, Bisping's experience and expertise offer a different perspective, one that highlights the importance of following medical advice.
"The Count" himself, Michael Bisping, fought through multiple eye surgeries and knows the consequences of rushing back. He underwent a total of five to six surgeries, and his retina detachment against Vitor Belfort serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the human eye.
"My retina re-detached, and despite the best efforts of medical science, I eventually lost vision in that eye. It's a harsh reality," Bisping shared. "For Tom, I hope he recovers fully, but he needs to take his time."
And this is the part most people miss: eye injuries are no joke. Despite Aspinall's determination to return, Bisping warns, "You can't rush back."
In a recent video, Aspinall revealed he underwent one eye surgery over the holidays, with another scheduled soon. Bisping's experience with post-surgery recovery is eye-opening (pun intended). He recalls, "Doctors advised me to avoid any activity that could raise my heart rate. Even a simple walk with my dogs up an incline led to the onset of glaucoma."
So, what does this mean for Aspinall's future? Bisping predicts an interim title fight, possibly between Ciryl Gane and Alex 'Poatan' Pereira, if Aspinall requires further surgery. "Alex Pereira versus Cyril Gane is my prediction for the new year," he concluded.
This story is a reminder of the physical toll MMA can take on fighters. What are your thoughts? Do you think Aspinall will make a full recovery, or is this the end of his UFC career? Share your opinions in the comments!
