After the 48-hour period, the oatmeal group saw their total cholesterol levels decrease by 8%, and their LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels dropped by a remarkable 10%. But the most intriguing part? The benefits didn't stop there. Even six weeks later, the participants' LDL levels remained lower than their starting point.

And this is the part most people miss: the potential reason behind this cholesterol drop. Researchers believe it's linked to the gut bacteria's breakdown of oats, which produces molecules that could improve cholesterol metabolism.

Lead author Linda Klümpen explains, "We found that consuming oatmeal increased the number of certain bacteria in the gut. For instance, we saw that intestinal bacteria produce phenolic compounds by breaking down the oats. Some of these compounds, like ferulic acid, have already shown positive effects on cholesterol metabolism in animal studies."

To further explore this, the team tested a byproduct called dihydroferulic acid, produced when gut bacteria break down oats. This compound seemed to reduce cholesterol storage.

However, it's important to note that the study's participants had metabolic syndrome, so the results might not apply to everyone. The researchers acknowledge this and emphasize the need for larger studies to confirm these findings and explore how oats influence gut bacteria, cholesterol, and potentially, weight loss.
