Uncover the Ancient Past: A Woolly Mammoth Tusk at Telford's Hoo Zoo
Step into the prehistoric era at Telford's Hoo Zoo, where a remarkable discovery awaits! A tusk from a woolly mammoth, estimated to be a staggering 10,000 years old, has taken center stage. This ancient relic, weighing in at six tonnes, once roamed the lands of northern Europe, including the Midlands, and now resides in a bespoke display within the zoo's captivating 'Prehistoric Park HQ' experience.
But here's where it gets fascinating! This tusk, measuring several feet in length, is a genuine, real woolly mammoth tusk, not a replica. It's a rare find, as many displayed tusks are often replicas due to the fragility of the real ones. Will Dorrell, co-owner of Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World in Hadley, Shropshire, shares his excitement, "It's great to be able to get this piece of history and bring these prehistoric animals, in a weird way, back to life." The tusk's journey began in Holland, where it spent five years before finding its new home at the zoo.
The Hoo Zoo collection boasts an array of prehistoric wonders, including a woolly rhino skull, showcasing the diversity of these ancient creatures. Mr. Dorrell highlights the significance of such displays, "Woolly mammoth tusks, particularly of this sort of size, don't come around every day." This tusk, a testament to the past, invites visitors to explore the mysteries of the Ice Age and sparks curiosity about the creatures that once roamed our planet.
