They've just announced their very own late-night show, Outside Tonight, hosted by the incredibly talented comedian, writer, and actor Julian Shapiro-Barnum. You might know Shapiro-Barnum from Recess Therapy, the charming interview show he created back in 2021 (exclusively on YouTube, of course!). Recess Therapy has snagged some seriously impressive guests, including Michelle Obama, Amy Poehler, Charli XCX, and even the viral sensation, the "Corn Kid." He's also behind Celebrity Substitute, where famous faces like Malala Yousafzai and Ed Sheeran hilariously step in as substitute teachers in a middle school.
Outside Tonight was unveiled at YouTube's inaugural Creator Premieres showcase in New York City. This event signals a major push by YouTube into the realm of traditional TV. Think of it as YouTube's version of a TV upfront presentation, where they showcase their upcoming content slate to advertisers. Last year, YouTube significantly revamped the user interface of its TV app to more closely resemble its streaming competitors, enabling creators to organize their content into structured seasons and episodes. And this is the part most people miss...this isn't just about making YouTube look more like TV. It's about attracting big advertising dollars that traditionally flowed to networks like CBS and NBC. YouTube currently boasts the largest share of monthly viewers across all streaming platforms, according to Nielsen, so they have a powerful audience to offer advertisers.
As the name Outside Tonight suggests, Shapiro-Barnum's studio backdrop won't be a studio at all! YouTube is pitching the series as a late-night format "built for the digital age." This means Shapiro-Barnum will be conducting his interviews in real-world locations like public parks and bustling street corners, embracing the spontaneity and unpredictability that's often absent from more polished, traditional late-night shows. Imagine a late-night show that feels like a viral YouTube video come to life. Perhaps we'll even see a cameo from Billy Eichner, the king of chaotic outdoor interviews! Each episode promises a mix of celebrity interviews, live music performances, audience-driven games, and, according to YouTube, "nonstop comedy."
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that moving late-night outside risks losing the comfort and control of a traditional studio setting. Will the unpredictable nature of public spaces enhance the comedy, or will it lead to awkward and distracting moments?
