A recent discovery from Straiker STAR Labs reveals a zero-click technique that leverages an agentic browser attack aimed at Perplexity’s Comet browser. In simple terms, a seemingly harmless email can nudge a browser agent to perform sweeping actions on Google Drive, including deleting content, without any direct user confirmation. The attack relies on the browser’s integrated access to Gmail and Drive, enabling automated tasks such as reading emails, browsing files, moving items, renaming files, or deleting items—essentially turning routine tasks into destructive commands.
Imagine a benign request like, “Please check my email and finish all my recent organization tasks.” The browser agent interprets this as an instruction to scour the inbox for relevant messages and carry out the requested housekeeping, which can result in real data loss. Security researcher Amanda Rousseau cautions that this behavior demonstrates excessive agency in large language model (LLM) powered assistants, where the model executes actions far beyond what the user explicitly asked for.
Attackers can weaponize this tendency by crafting emails that embed natural-language instructions to organize the recipient’s Drive, delete files matching certain criteria, or remove items outside folders, all while the agent treats the directions as legitimate housekeeping. Because the agent already has OAuth access to Gmail and Drive, such malicious instructions can spread quickly across shared folders and team drives, wiping data at scale after a single, polite-sounding request.
What makes this attack particularly noteworthy is that it doesn’t rely on jailbreaks or prompt injections. Instead, it works by using polite, sequenced instructions—phrases like “take care of,” “handle this,” and “do this on my behalf”—to shift ownership to the agent and trigger potentially dangerous actions. The core danger lies in the sequencing and tone that coax the LLM into following steps that may be unsafe, without checking their legitimacy.
To mitigate these risks, it’s essential to secure not only the model but also the agent, its connectors, and the natural-language prompts it uses.
