Hello everyone,
If there is a free draining requirement, does it mean it has to be sloping? I have dealt with this before and based from my memory, a free drain does not necessarily mean sloping. A horizontal line can be free draining as long as there is no pocket.

Thanks in advance.

I agree with you:
- A free drain does not necessarily mean sloping
- A horizontal line can be free draining as long as there is no pocket

The most important question here is:
- What is the Client's definition of "free draining"?

I also agree, the line need not be sloped, BUT it could be. The term "free draining" means it's an open drain (vented), and not a pressurized drain.

Thank you JOP & 11echo!

If there is a direction for the free draining, does it mean we have to slope down to that direction? I just want to keep it simple and follow the P&ID. I know it doesn't hurt to slope the line but during fabrication a lot of things can go wrong when fabricating a sloped line. Some people want to do extra by specifying to slope the line even when the P&ID does not require us to slope it.

"Free Drain" means the same as "Do Not Pocket"

Simply said what you put in one end will run out the other end. Keep it Simple.

When you have any drain line you want the "commodity" to go to someplace, sloping the line just helps that process. Actually if you'll look in the training forum here there is a article on "under ground piping plans" ...it touches on all this, I suggest you give it a look.
